I enjoy stopping by any sand castle competition in Connecticut I can find.  I am use to seeing dozens of submissions when I visit a competition and I was surprised to see only a few at a recent contest.

When I asked one of the competitors why there were so few entries, the answer was “COVID.”

How the virus would cause a drop in sand castle builders, I do not know…especially for an outdoor activity!

At any rate, these are a few sand creations I did happen upon recently.

I love checking out sandcastle contests at this time of year!  One of the great things about living on the coast in Connecticut is that it is easy to find one!

Today for Friday field trip, I am sharing a few of my favorite sand creations from a recent contest.  It was not easy to edit my photos to post just a few sand sculptures, but it was easy to pick my favorite!

There were plenty of wonderful creations, but the couch design was my personal fave!  Isn’t it great?

The best part of this Christmas in July themed creation was probably the music!  The creators played the Hawaiian Christmas Song (Mele Kulilkimaka) during the judging!  I had the Christmas classic by Bing Crosby stuck in my head for at least a week after the contest!

Maybe I have inspired you to play in the sand a little bit this weekend?  I hope so!  Have a great one!

friday field trip

sand castles in CT

It has been a really crazy week and I can’t believe I even have time to post, but I couldn’t let a Friday go by without a Friday field trip!  Here in Connecticut, we have been having some really hot weather…I think we had a day with a record breaking temperature…it really is starting to feel like summer :)

What better way to start gearing up for summer than to attend a sandcastle competition?  So, I decided to attend a local competition and post some photos to help get you into the summer spirit.  No better way to feel happy about the beach….except maybe to listen to the Beach Boys… or watch an episode of Sand Masters.

Here are my two favorites…

How about this ‘dude?’  Gotta love him :) Look at the hair!

Has anyone else out there discovered the show Sand Masters on the Travel channel?  I am enthralled with the show.   There are people out there that call themselves master sand sculptors and basically make a living out of creating things in the sand.  Sand Masters showcases these professionals.  If you live in an area that is hard-pressed for a sandcastle competition and my pictures aren’t enough…try checking out the show…you can watch it on the Travel channel or on line…here is a taste:

Hope you enjoyed Field Trip Friday…and a little taste of summer from here in Connecticut :)
