a tuscany themed shower

xcork holder gift

Why was a Tuscany theme extra special for the bridal shower I helped organize?  Tuscany was the location of the proposal!

The bridesmaids, mother of the bride, mother of the groom, and myself got together for planning (and some good eating!) meetings months ahead of the shower date.  The mother of the bride had the place and theme decided, so we ran with it!

Of course, a couple things just pop into your mind when you think of Tuscany!  We decided to use lemons, and all things wine as reoccurring décor items.

The maid of honor, an artist, created a beautiful painting of the proposal as a gift to the bride.  The painting was front and center on the day of the shower – we used it on the mantel above the spot where the future bride opened her gifts.  The maid of honor also created a beautiful handlettered sign “Showered with Amore” that greeted guests as they arrived.

recreation of proposal

I created table signs, naming each table after an Italian wine.  The guests picked up a table card strategically placed on a cork in a crate of grapes.  The same type of graphic was used to tag the favors – a homemade Tuscan spice mix created by the soon-to-be bride’s mom.  I used the same theme/colors in creating a ‘bridal bingo’ game.  Another favor, created by the matron of honor, was a cluster of grapes styled from chocolate candies…so cute!

The mother of the future groom had saved corks from the entire time of her marriage – she had A LOT – and we used these in our decorating…and, in our games.  One of the games was “Guess How Many Corks in the Jar.”

Can you believe I found a dress in a lemon print fabric? It was an Anne Klein Dress at an original price of $119. that I bought off-season at T.J. Maxx for $29.99!

The best part of the shower, of course, was getting together with old friends and meeting new friends who will be a part of the upcoming wedding day.  The bride-to-be looked absolutely fabulous!  If the shower day was any indication of how she will look on the wedding day – bellissima!!

I hope you enjoyed seeing a few photos from the Tuscan themed shower created by ‘our team.’  We all had a blast – the reason I didn’t take as many photos as usual!  I hope you are inspired to use some of our ideas in your own party planning!

Thanks for stopping by!  Remember to take pleasure in simple things.  Ciao,  Jackie

pink & gold nautical bridal shower

 Flowers pink and gold shower

Pink and gold may not seem the typical color choice for a nautical themed party, but who said anything about typical?  And, I certainly have no problem arranging a nautical party in any color scheme! :)

Since no décor can beat a coastal view, this bridal shower needed to take place at a yacht club!

The gals in the bridal party, serving as hostesses for the event, dressed in the theme colors and all looked beautiful!  Of course, it helps when all the gals are gorgeous!  ;)

Soft pink and gold appeared in all the details of the day.

The tables were set with gold chargers and cream linens.  Table names were displayed in a brushed gold finish pedestal frame and displayed the names of bodies of water that held significance for the bride-to-be.  Examples include the name of a lake from a campground she frequented as a child and the name of a river from college crew.  Working with a florist, subtle and romantic blush and white free-form arrangements were created in gold compotes. (A smaller version for the powder room!)

Individually wrapped sea glass candy on the tables also added to the nautical vibe. (Oddly enough, I make sea glass candy every Christmas, but rarely at any other time of year!)  The bride’s favorite flavors were represented in the white (pear), pink (cotton candy), and brown (root beer) pieces of candy wrapped with raffia and adorned with a mini sand dollar.

Standard cocktail napkins and water glasses were replaced with some on-theme choices and festive gold straws were added to the water station.

Wedding photos of the bride-to-be’s mother, future mother-in-law, grandmother, and grandmother-to-be were displayed in the entry way in glass and gold frames to add a personal touch.

Themed prize baskets were given to winners of the games organized by the maid-of-honor, as well as the guest with the closest birthday, the guest that drove the farthest to attend the shower, etc.

The golden bracelets for the ‘bracelet bonanza’ game had everyone wearing a shiny gold bangle (right on theme) and provided some added interaction between guests.  The ‘he said, she said’ game was fun and added a glimpse into the personalities of the soon-to-be wed couple.

For the refreshments – a selection of assorted breads, coffee and mimosas were available when the guests arrived.  A fruit course, served in martini glasses, was followed by a plated brunch and later with cake and sorbet.

Adding to the theme of the day, the cake (vanilla with salted caramel filling) was created with an outside of soft pink ‘waves’ and garnished with fondant starfish dipped in gold.  The sorbet was provided by a friend of the bride’s mom, created specifically for the shower in coconut lemongrass from a local gourmet food store and served in take-home stemless wine glasses.  (The bridal party gals were each gifted a set of four.)

Now, who said pink and gold wasn’t nautical?

recipe for love

a spoon from bridal shower activity pleasure in simple things blog

I recently went to a really fabulous bridal shower hosted by the future bride’s mom – with some help from the gals in the bridal party. Today, I am sharing one of the activities created for the event.

When I walked into the shower, I noticed wooden spoons tied in gold ribbon graced all the place settings. They certainly seemed appropriate for a bridal shower; particularly for this once, since both the future bride and future groom are great cooks!

But, it wasn’t until a little later into the shower that the true purpose of the spoons was revealed. These spoons were meant to hold each guest’s ‘recipe for a happy marriage.’

Fine point permanent markers were passed around to guests and each spent some time creating the perfect ‘recipe’ for the bride-to-be; recording it onto a spoon.

What a sweet idea to collect the sentiments of all the guests!

The groom’s mom’s message to the bride-to-be. :)

After the bride-to-be chose her three favorite spoons, the bridal party displayed them in a shadow box and awarded prizes to the authors of the three chosen sentiments. Priceless! (With a little more time, maybe the spoon handles could be dipped in metallic gold paint or gold-leafed as part of the permanent shadow box!)

I hope you are inspired by this sweet ‘recipe for love.’

Please stop back on Friday when I will share some of the wonderful decor from this shower.  I can’t wait to reveal the fabulous venue!

beachy bridal shower

beach themed decorations

A visit to a bridal shower is today’s Friday field trip.  I am sharing some of the decorations I created for a beach themed bridal shower, hoping it may provide inspiration for some of your own party planning.

beach theme invitations

The first impression for any party is created by the invitation.  So, for this party we needed something really ‘beachy.’  What better than a message in a bottle for an invite?!  I created the message on my home computer and printed out copies on a color printer.  The messages were rolled and inserted into glass bottles and mailed off in boxes the size of the bottles (with a little extra room to protect them with some bubble wrap).

Not only does the invitation create the mood, but gives guests the opportunity to wrap their gifts in the theme and also to dress the part!

Welcoming guests into the party also creates a great opportunity to set the mood.  I used a skim board chalkboard with the future couple’s initials at the entryway to welcome guests to the party.  And, don’t forget that summertime playlist…Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett need to be included!

The labels for the takeaway favors were also created on a home computer and printed on label sheets using a color printer.  Inside each ‘beach pail’ were some realistic looking candy rocks, salt water taffy, and homemade decorated sugar cookies cut in the shapes of shells and fish.

Beach themed wines or frozen drinks are great for a beach themed party, but for a bridal shower, including the future bride’s favorite drink is a must!  All the fixings for this guest of honor’s favorite were included at the drink bar.

This shower was held at the future groom’s parent’s house.  ‘Beachy’ photos of the future groom as a child were collected and printed out in black and white on a home copier.  I ripped the photos rather than cutting them to create a ragged edge.  The photos were used in old jars and placed down the center of the tables.

I used a burlap runner down each table and decorated with old jars, lanterns, twine, raffia, shells, sea glass, driftwood, and rocks to set the mood.

Some of the jars were filled with sea glass and water to fill with daisies…always a great symbol of summer.

The same decor was carried through to decorate the bathrooms and the area where everyone gathered to watch the future bride open gifts – where a large white washed anchor set the tone.

“Beachyness” was included in every detail.  The dessert bar included cupcakes topped with graham cracker crumb ‘sand’ and garnished with variegated chocolate shells, seahorses, and starfish that were made by the future groom’s mom.

Those are some of the decorations…I didn’t have enough space to show you every detail, but feel free to send me an email if you are having a beach themed party of your own and I would be happy to give you some more ‘beachy’ ideas ;)  I hope you enjoyed today’s Friday field trip to check out the decorations at a beach themed bridal shower.
