how to pickleball wardrobe

August 4, 2023

New to the sport of pickleball, putting together my pickleball wardrobe became an obsession.  Determined to put health and safety first, my first mission was to find an appropriate paddle and footwear.  I talked to some orthopedics to decide how to choose the best paddle for long-term wear and tear on my body.  I found out that weight and grip size of a paddle are important in this regard.  Instructed not to go over a weight of 7.8 or a grip size over 4”, I chose an appropriate paddle that didn’t break the bank!

Next was footwear.  I decided to focus on tennis shoes since there is quite a variety available and it seemed to me the shoes designed for both pickleball and tennis would be similar.  My daughter bought me On Clouds for Christmas and I absolutely LOVE them.  For this reason, I looked on their website to see if there were any options for tennis shoes.  Sure enough, they had designed a tennis shoe named after Roger Federer.  Though expensive, I thought it was important to get the right pair of shoes.  It ended up my daughter bought me the pair I was admiring for Mother’s Day so I was set in the shoe department.  My new tennis shoes are just as comfy as the shoes I received as a Christmas gift!

The one other necessity, since I play outdoors, is the sunscreen.  So, I stocked up on a mineral sunscreen (recommended by my Dermatologist since mineral sunscreen is not absorbed into the skin) and I had my basics covered.  I just need to mention that eye protection is an important base to cover when playing any sport – I always keep my eyes protected!

Now, for the clothing.  Much to my dismay, since COVID, I really don’t wear many of my clothes.  And, although I wear many more athletic clothes than I do regular clothes (especially in the summer), you would never guess that by looking at my closet – barely any athletic attire.  I decided I would put together an affordable wardrobe of clothes appropriate for pickleball.  I started by surfing the internet for every source of athletic clothes.  I found the most options by looking for golf and tennis clothes.  I like to wear leggings and shirts, but in the extremely hot and humid weather, skirts and dresses are much more comfortable.  Being tall makes it tough to find a good fit in a dress, but I was able to find a couple good ones that were on sale.  Many of my sale items were purchased on or near the 4th of July when many stores had sales and/or sale codes for purchases.  There continues to be many summer items on sale, so it is a good time to plan ahead and purchase for next year!

Since I use leggings for yoga and other exercise classes as well, they are a multi-purpose item that is a good investment for me!  Other than TJ Maxx, one of my favorite places for leggings is www.marika.com.  I found some of my favorite leggings on this site and they often have great sales.  They recently had a 3 pair for $39 and I loved some of the patterns offered.  In fact, I rebought a favorite pair that I ripped during a recent fall trying to make a tough return shot!  Of course, I stop by my local TJ Maxx and Marshalls regularly to check on current, affordable offerings.  And, this season, I was able to score a great pair of leggings from the Old Navy clearance rack for $9.99!

Places that aren’t necessarily sports stores sometimes offer a piece or two of athletic wear and seem to have really great sales since people probably aren’t looking there for these type of items.  Examples of this are a pretty green dress I ended up scoring for $16 at the www.loft.com.  It’s so cute, and has the attached shorts underneath.  The same happened with www.jcrew.com.  I found a really pretty scalloped edge sports dress on clearance.

favorite skirted leggings

Tennis or golf skirts are best purchased at Marshalls or TJ Maxx, but I found a couple of superior sources.  Though pricier, they are worth purchasing on sale or requesting as a birthday or holiday gift.  The best source I’ve found was recommended to me by my friend Angela who plays pickleball outside all year.  It is www.donajobrand.com.  The skirts come in a variety of fun prints and in many styles.  Most importantly, they come in a variety of lengths.  Because I am tall, I often feel the length of skirts are obscene on me – showing way too much.  With Dona Jo, it is easy to get a more modest fit.  The other great source I found – and the best for skirted leggings is www.solsisters.com.  A really attractive and well-made product!

Now to throw in a little fun!  I’m not a big fan of t-shirts and I’ve never owned a shirt with writing on the front, but I found myself purchasing a couple of fun novelty shirts for pickleball.  One I found on Amazon and the other on Etsy. (I also liked one that said “I’d hit that,” but thought maybe that went a little too far and decided against it!)

big dink energy

So, I have a great pickleball wardrobe put together for a very affordable price!  Now if I can just figure out how to avoid the tan lines around my ankles!

Thanks for stopping by.  Dink on!

Have a fabulous weekend!  Remember to take pleasure in simple things, Jackie

P.S.  Still on the lookout for some old school tennis socks with the pom-poms on the back!

Safety Tip:  Although many athletic skirts and leggings offer pockets – don’t use them to hold extra balls…this can cause injuries in the event of falling on a non-forgiving plastic ball!

llama

March can be a crazy weather time in New England.  One day may be snow and the next day could be a shorts and sandals kind of day!

This past week, with temperatures in the 60’s, it has certainly been more of the shorts-wearing type of weather!

The mild weather has made spending time outdoors very enjoyable this past week.  One of my favorite things this week was saying hello to some of my neighbors during my daily walks.  These three, in particular, are normally extremely shy.

Apparently, the warm weather has given them some extra courage to say hello!

I hope I have inspired you to take a walk and say hello to some of your neighbors!

binge-worthy shows for quarantine

May 12, 2020

During this quarantine period, watching a television show with multiple seasons can be comforting in some obscure way – a show to count on each night as you return to it, on demand, to pick up a story where it left off.

I thought I’d compile and share a list of the shows I found during the quarantine in case you may also be looking for a good series!

In the past, I have watched Breaking Bad and Ozarks, but find I have a lot of trouble these days watching anything terribly graphic or violent.  I mention this because the shows on this list do not have any graphic violence or horror.

In addition to this list, I’m always a fan of HGTV and all cooking shows.  These shows are pretty safe from graphic violence – unless, of course, you count some killer knife skills!   (By the way, the current season of Top Chef is fabulous!  Not only is it set in Los Angeles, but it is a season of All-Star chefs!)

Better Things (4 seasons) This comedy-drama stars Pamela Adlon.  I only became aware of Adlon when she happened to be a guest on a talk show in New York City that I went to see live.  She was pitching her new show.  Years later, I happened to see Better Things as a choice on an airplane TV during a flight home from a work trip.  After watching a couple of the episodes on the plane, I couldn’t wait to see more!

This show was written by Louis C.K. and Pamela Adlon and when Louis C.K. confirmed the sexual misconduct allegations against him were true, I feared this show may be cancelled.  But, lucky for us viewers, the show continued without his involvement.

Better Things is a semi-autobiographically show based on Adlon’s life and depicts a single mother raising daughters as a working actor in Los Angeles.

This thoughtful and entertaining depiction addresses so many raw and real moments between mother/daughter(s), divorced parents, interactions with friends, and adventures with an older parent.

Added bonuses – some great guest stars and well thought out music. (The show is named after the song Better Things by the Kinks).  And, in season 4, a fabulous scene where the siblings, mom, and grandmother create an expressive dance as a graduation gift to one of the daughters.

Schitt’s Creek (6 seasons) When rich video-store magnate Johnny Rose and his family are suddenly penniless, they are forced to leave their pampered lives to regroup in Schitt’s Creek – the small town the Roses bought years earlier as a joke.  In this sitcom, the Rose family is forced to face their newfound poverty head-on and come together as a family to survive.

Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara (both of SCTV fame) are cast as the parents.  (You may remember Catherine best for her infamous lip-sync version of Day-O at the dinner table scene in the movie Beetlejuice.)

A real family affair, this show was created by Dan and Eugene Levy.  Dan is Eugene’s son in real life as well as on the show.  Dan’s real-life sister also plays a character on the show.  The writing is fabulous and the show depicts the gay relationship of Dan’s character and his boyfriend in a way we rarely see on television.

After you watch a few episodes, your most burning question may be “How the heck does Catherine O’Hara stay in character?!”

Extra bonuses on this show include Catherine O’Hara’s flamboyant wardrobe and some great taglines!

Sex Education (2 seasons) I love a good coming-of-age story and this one adds a little different twist on the theme as the main character, socially awkward high school student Otis, has a mom (played by Gillian Anderson) who is a sex therapist.   Being surrounded by manuals, videos and tediously open conversations about sex, Otis has become a reluctant expert on the subject.  He teams up with the school’s bad girl to earn some money by providing a sex therapy clinic to deal with their classmates’ problems.  Of course, through his analysis of teenage sexuality, we find Otis realizing that he may need some therapy of his own!

An added bonus is the gorgeous backdrop – Otis’s morning commute to school alone is a breathtakingly beautiful trip!   You may find yourself adding a visit to South Wales to your bucket list after watching a few episodes of this show!

Blood Line (3 seasons) This dramatic thriller is a show I recently started on the recommendation of my son.  The show portrays a contemporary American family, the Rayburns – hard-working pillars of their Florida Keys community.  Their past contains dark secrets that they hope remain buried.  Paranoia and mistrust build as lies pile up, alliances are shattered, and an unthinkable crime takes place.  What happens when ‘good’ people are forced to consider doing very bad things?

My favorite character is the troubled brother and bad-boy Danny Rayburn played by the Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn who won an Emmy for his masterful performance.

Of course, the added bonus here is the Florida backdrop!  The Rayburns own and run an Inn located right on the crystal blue waters of the Florida Keys.

Dead to Me (2 seasons) In this dark comedy, a hotheaded widow, played by Christina Applegate, is searching for the hit-and-run driver who mowed down her husband.  In the process, she befriends an eccentric optimist (Linda Cardellini) who isn’t quite what she seems.  The women quickly bond, but there are a lot of secrets that threaten their friendship.

With plenty of unexpected twists, I really enjoyed the first season and it was high on my recommendation list to friends.  Now I am looking forward to watching the recently released second season!

Note:  Linda Cardellini is best known for her role on the television show ER.  She also plays the role of one of the Rayburn siblings in Bloodline (recommended above).

Grace and Frankie (6 seasons) Grace and Frankie (played by Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin) learn that their husbands have fallen in love with each other and want to get married. As everything around the ladies is coming apart, the only thing they can really rely on is each other. This Netflix original provides some fabulous laugh-out-loud moments – particularly in regard to Jane Fonda’s reactions to the challenges of growing older.

Considering the way mature women are treated in our society, this show is refreshing in its depiction of Grace (80 years old) and Frankie (70 something years old) – both developing successful businesses and new relationships in a later stage of life.

Three additional bonuses:  Jane Fonda’s wardrobe, the California beach house the gals live in, and Martin Sheen.

The Big Flower Fight (releasing May 18th) It is hard to include this on the list, since it hasn’t released yet, but I am hopeful it will be fabulous!  I am eagerly anticipating this show on Netflix.  Ten teams of amateur garden sculptors are to make huge flower installations based on weekly themes.  The teams of two have assembled from all over the world to take part in the competition in the British countryside.  I hope it is as great as it sounds!!

Thank you for stopping by!  I hope you try watching one of the shows on my list!  If you do, let me know how you liked it!

no labor day 2019

beach on ldw

How was your holiday weekend?  I did work some of the weekend.  Here in Connecticut we had a pretty good weather weekend.  Yesterday was a bit of a crazy weather day, but I guess that was because of all the stormy weather approaching.

rocks on the beach

I went down to the water in the afternoon to see if Dorian had impacted anything here.  The rain kept coming and going, but the water wasn’t rough.

The beaches were pretty empty because of the weather – even though they were open for the holiday weekend.

I included a few photos as a tribute to summer of 2019!

I hope you had a great weekend!  Enjoy the (summer!) week ahead.

it is still summer people!

orange flower

I know the school supplies are just about wiped out at Target.  But, listen folks – summer is not over!  Why does the start of school have to be the end of summer?

I went to my favorite home and garden store on Sunday and all the signs pointed to fall…it was very disheartening!

pumpkin butter

I really don’t like seeing pumpkin spice everything when it is still August!

I have until September 23rd to celebrate my favorite season and I will squeeze every single moment out of it until then!  I hope you are enjoying summer as much as I am…there is plenty of time to appreciate fall after the 23rd!

Have a wonderful week!

piles of snow in Feb

Today I am sharing some photos I took this time six years ago.  Maybe my friends here in Connecticut will think better than to relax about this year’s snow.

it started with sea glass sinks

Before bathroom photos

My friend Phyllis is finishing up a remodel of the bathroom off her bedroom.  I am so enamored with the results!

view of double sinks

So, even though the bathroom wasn’t yet styled and the window coverings weren’t yet complete, I snapped a few photos when I was last over her house.  This bathroom just made me so happy to look at, I had to share.

cabinet with floor detail

The level of detail on the trim work is beautiful.  A mutual friend from back in our high school days is a master craftsman and was responsible for the designing/creating of these details.

shower and tub in the sunlight

The combination of a master craftsman and my friend’s great taste made the bathroom come together in a fabulous way!

floor detail

The entire project was spearheaded by the selection of two beautiful sea glass looking sinks!  They were the first item chosen for the bathroom and provide a fabulous little pop of color to the finished project!

The ‘cherry on the top’ is the view from the tub!  But then, this is the yard I call a park…the landscaping is fabulous and the property adjoins a golf course.  In the middle of winter it may be hard to imagine the gorgeous view during the rest of the year, but you can see it by clicking here.

Thanks for joining me today on Friday field trip.  I hope you enjoyed seeing some little glimpses of my friend’s new bathroom!

Hello friends!

I am sorry to say that due to some totally unexpected circumstances, I am unable to use the computer – probably for a couple weeks.  :(  Since this blog has been started, I have never missed a post – so you know this is serious!

I will be back at it as soon as I am able.  I will miss you during my break.

word for the year 2018

January 2, 2018

2018

Do you have a word for the year?   I don’t feel a need to have one every year, although I usually have a yearly focus.  For 2018 I have a clear focus, but I find it impossible to find a single word to represent it!

I have some very major schedule changes I want to accomplish in 2018.  I wondered how that could be represented in a single word.  Maybe overhaul?  Revamp?  Redesign?  Not very sexy!  How about something a little more subtle…like shift, change, or redesign?  My 2018 goals just don’t seem to fit into a single word!

I DO think I can represent an attitude for the year with a quote…one of my favorites from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.”

I think I will leave you with this quote and forget about a single word for 2018.
