new life for my fern container

September 14, 2018

finished succulent rocks

I had a lovely little potted fern.  It always put a smile on my face.  I received it as a favor at a wedding shower and I always loved it.  I even tucked a little bird inside of it!

fern casualtySo, I was really disappointed when my fern died – I had enjoyed it for years!

I decided not to put another living plant inside the cute little container the fern lived in, but I did want to reuse it.  Since I’d been painting rocks recently, a rock painting came to mind right away!

For today’s Friday field trip, look at the quick and easy rock painting I made for my fern container!  (I was inspired by the succulent Easter eggs I made last year!  Click here to see them.)

painting the rocks

A very simplistic design can bring satisfying results!  I hope I have inspired you to paint some!  If you want to keep your rocks outside, be sure to spray them with clear coat to protect against the elements!

Of course, if I was embracing the season, I would have painted some pumpkin rocks ;) !

beat it fall!

September 11, 2018

doormat

I am not accepting fall gracefully this year!  I didn’t have enough time to enjoy the summer and I am kind of bitter about the change of season!

I haven’t even begun to think about changing up my décor, though I did need to add a blanket to my bed last night.  And, I must confess, we had a fire lit in the fireplace last night.

Still!  I want to keep summer alive!

In an attempt to let summer go gracefully, I started combining the seasons…one way I’m accomplishing this is in the garden.  Instead of pulling up the summer annuals and planting fall blooms, I have started combining the two!

parsley and mums

Here is one example.  In my cosmos/parsley container, I removed the wilted cosmos and let the parsley hang on for dear life while I added some mums. If we don’t get an early frost that kills the parsley, it will look great combined with the mums when they are in full bloom!

mixing seasons

I am looking around for some additional ways to combine seasonal plants around my yard.  How about you?  Have you combined fall and summer plants in your garden?  I would love to hear about your combinations!

white flowers are the best flowers

part of the moon garden on a rainy day

One of the first perennial borders planted by the founders of White Flower Farm was pure white. (For a short time, the owners even considered growing and offering only white-flowered perennials and shrubs..I wish that was carried through!)

I call my all-white garden a ‘virgin’ garden.  At White’s, the all-white garden is called a ‘moon’ garden.  The white border is planted with a white tree wisteria and looks crisp and refreshing during the day and positively glows at twilight – the reason for its name!

This garden is my favorite at the farm, but visitors can’t get too close to admire it.  This changes once a year when White’s has their open house.  During the open house tour – and the best part of it – visitors can get up close and personal to the fabulous moon garden!

This year, the open house happened on a rainy day, but I wasn’t going to miss the tour and my chance to get close to the moon garden!

lavender in connecticut

at the lavendar field

I’m still trying to recover from an exciting weekend!  Our family had a big (white party) celebration on Saturday and it is taking me some time to get back into my work routine!

Today, I wanted to let my local friends know that right now is prime lavender blooming time here in Connecticut!  If you have not yet visited Lavender Pond Farm, now is the time to go!

With over 10,000 plants on 25 acres, Lavender Pond is the largest lavender farm in New England.

It is easy to find off the Clinton exit of I95 – just a couple minutes north of the outlets.

Yes, the day my friend and I planned on visiting White Flower Farm for their annual open house was a rainy day!  But, that did not stop us from attending!

We weren’t going to let the rain get in the way of our day off and the fabulous prospect of visiting one of our favorite garden centers in Connecticut!

flowers inspired by paintings

flowers inspired by a blacksmith painting

Art and the New England Farm is a currently on display at The Florence Griswold Museum, showcasing works by artists from the 19th to 21st century.  I choose to visit the exhibit on a special weekend – one that also included Blooms with a View.

flower arrangement inspired by a paintingI was so very intrigued by the display of flower arrangements created from inspiration garnered from the Art and the New England Farm collection, I needed to share some of the works on today’s Friday field trip.

Each floral designer creating an arrangement, chose a painting from the collection to serve as an inspiration for their creation.  What a cool art form!  Maybe suggest it as an interesting activity for your garden club or even as a fundraising project!

miss florence’s garden

Miss Flo's Old Lyme garden

One of Connecticut’s historical treasures is the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, home of Florence Griswold which was the center of the Old Lyme Art Colony –  the main center of development of American Impressionism.

In addition to the museum’s collections, the grounds are something to admire.  For today’s Friday field trip, I am sharing some photographs of the June garden at the historic site.

Florence Griswold, or “Miss Florence” as her friends knew her, was an avid gardener.

view to the water

An archaeological dig in 1998 identified the physical boundaries of the garden beds and walkways of Florence Griswold’s garden before her death in 1937.  With this information, as well as paintings and historic photographs of the site, Miss Florence’s garden was recreated to its appearance circa 1910.

garden mulch alternative

May 22, 2018

using shells as mulch

Usually my gardens are in order by Mother’s Day.  And, Mother’s Day has always been my goal date to finish planting annuals and have all the mulch down.  This year, the crazy weather caused me to be way behind on my garden schedule.  My only little scraps of time to do yard work were during heavy rains or tornado conditions!  (Yes, tornadoes!  Area schools have been out for 4 days due to the damage caused by tornado touchdowns in Connecticut!)  This year, I actually visited the nursery and purchased my annuals in the powering rain, holding an umbrella!

nautical bird bath

The smallest little garden in my yard is located by my back door.  Because I see it every time I enter or leave the house, I have always tried to do something a little different in that one patch.  In many past years, I have used cocoa hull mulch in that back door garden, because I loved the chocolate smell every time I passed!  Now, it is impossible to find the cocoa mulch – garden centers tell me they stopped carrying it because it attracted animals.  I thought about using beach stones as an alternate mulch.  I am already using beach stones in other gardens and I thought it might add a nice continuity – maybe adding some beach grasses to that garden to give it an added coastal vibe.

shell mulch

So, when I saw oyster shells used as mulch at this year’s flower show in Philadelphia, I thought it might be just the interesting substitute for cocoa mulch that I was looking for!  Besides the fact that people don’t collect oyster shells, we also have a city nearby that boasts 12,000 acres of oyster farms – getting the shells won’t be a problem!

oyster shell mulch

What do you think?  Good idea?  I love the irregular shape and interesting texture!

oyster shells as mulch in garden

Note:  Because oyster shells break down faster than a sturdier shell, like a clam, they may need to be replaced frequently.  So, if you are considering using oyster shells in your own garden, be sure to consider this.

beauty in simplicity

May 15, 2018

hostas in a vase

A big garden isn’t needed to enjoy the outdoors in your home.

ferns on ferns

Pick a single flower or a single leaf or grab a sprig from shrub clippings.  Even the bad boys in the yard (enter dandelions in seed), can evoke a positive mood – creating the sense of fulfilled wishes or dreams yet to be – when displayed as a single bloom in a container!

white bleeding hearts in vase

If you don’t have a yard, just take a walk through the woods or a public park…heck, you can find a beautiful wildflower on the side of the throughway!

flowers in a teacup lilly of the valley

Then, display your little piece of the outdoors in a container.  No fancy or expensive vase is needed! Just look in your recycling bin or in your cupboards for some great ideas!  Any small vessel will do!  Examples include:  a tiny espresso cup, a teacup, a small milk pitcher, or a glass liquor ‘nip’ bottle or other small discarded bottle.

pansy in nip bottle

Just display this little piece of beauty in any room – in any little scrap of space where you will glance over at it and smile!

lilac with sea glass

The beauty and simplicity of a single flower or leaf is an instant mood lifter and is a great way to display the awesomeness of nature in your home.

I hope I have inspired you to display little pieces of nature in your home!

spring at the broadmoor, colorado springs

May 8, 2018

broadmoor through the trees

On a recent trip (my first!) to Colorado, I had the opportunity to visit an iconic Colorado Springs resort.  The Broadmoor offers guests an incredible way to experience the unique beauty of the American West.

pink blooms at the Broadmoor

Many admire the ornate, European décor in this historic hotel (currently celebrating its centennial) as its standout feature, but, for me; the beauty of the hotel is truly in its surroundings.  Today I am sharing the views through the trees – a few of my favorite spring views on the property surrounding the hotel.  (You know I always find some kind of theme when appreciating a hotel stay!)

old world charm at The Broadmoor

This unique hotel, located on 3,000 acres of property at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, is just 5 miles from downtown Colorado Springs and offers an amazing selection of accommodations, activities, and experiences.

The Broadmoor has remained one of the most recognizable and celebrated hotels in the world. Its distinctive blend of history, luxury and genuine hospitality has made The Broadmoor the longest-running consecutive winner of both the AAA Five-Diamond and Forbes Five-Star awards.

The Broadmoor is a wonderful hotel for people that enjoy keeping active!  There is so much to do on the property!  In addition, The Olympic Training Center, Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, and the Air Force Academy are just a few of the cool places to visit nearby.

If you have any interest in visiting Colorado, this is the place to stay!  Especially this year –  The Broadmoor is celebrating its Centennial and the year is filled with activities, specials and events.
