‘eggs’traordinary

March 7, 2014

molded hard boiled egg
Inspired by the playful works of art in Japanese character bento boxes, Williams-Sonoma sells a product that changes the shape of a hard-boiled egg!  I was fascinated with the idea of this product when I spotted it at the store…and, with Easter quickly approaching, I knew I had to try it out!  I am sharing the adorable results with you on today’s Friday field trip.

Following the easy directions on the box of the Egg-Design Molds, I set out to create a heart, a star, a rabbit, and a bear from some hard boiled eggs.

My true interest was in the rabbit (for Easter), but I also wanted to test the star to use for deviled eggs later this summer – very patriotic for our 4th of July party on the beach!

star shaped molded eggs
Creating these eggs was really easy.  I just followed the simple directions on the box.  Basically:

  1. Cook 4 extra-large eggs
  2. Dip one egg in a bowl of ice water, then peel off the shell
  3. Place egg in a mold
  4. Set in ice water
  5. Repeat for the other 3 eggs
  6. After 10 minutes, remove from molds

Egg Design Molds

Aren’t these sure to be a hit at the ‘kids’ table on Easter?

These molds can be purchased on sale online here.  Three sets would make a dozen eggs at a time – or, a half dozen star shaped deviled (half) eggs.

Since I tested my deviled eggs, I included the recipe.  I am not a big mayo fan, so my version cuts the mayo with sour cream.  Enjoy!

showing of the green

March 4, 2014

packaged St. Pat's cookies
St. Patrick’s Day is coming up…how do I celebrate?

I usually plant some shamrocks in an unexpected container…or make some homemade Irish Cream…this year, in addition, I am adding a little green to my baking.

Irish Blessing

I think anything green goes over well on St. Patrick’s Day…what other holiday could possibly make green bagels or green beer seem like a good idea?

This year, I am adding some green swirls to my cookies!  If you haven’t used this technique in your cookie making, it is relatively easy to do – it just requires a little bit of patience.

making swirl cookies
I have used this technique to create ‘wave’ cookies for a beach themed party (by adding blue paste food coloring) or to create mocha swirl cookies (by adding cocoa and espresso powder).  As you can imagine, it is easily adaptable to a number of different themes/flavors…so keep it in mind for future entertaining!

steps in making swirl cookies
Divide your cookie dough in half, dyeing one half with paste food coloring.  In addition, I added some lime juice and lime zest – just so the green color made some sense!  You can use your favorite butter or sugar cookie dough…I have never tried this with the packages of sugar cookie dough that is sold in the refrigerator section of the grocery store, but I bet they would work out just as well.

Just pat each half of (chilled) dough into a rectangle on a piece of wax paper…measure each piece – so they are the same size.  Wrap each piece separately in wax paper and put into the refrigerator until firm.  Invert the plain piece of dough onto a large, clean piece of wax paper and peel off the top layer of wax paper.  Invert the green rectangle of dough on top of the plain dough so that the edges are aligned.  Peel off the top layer of paper.  With floured hands, pat the dough so that the layers adhere.

Working from a longer side, roll the dough into a cylinder.  If the dough becomes too soft to work with, refrigerate briefly, then continue rolling.  Wrap the cylinder in wax paper and refrigerate until firm or overnight.  Slice and bake the cookies as usual.

daisy for St. Patrick's Day

I added some clear sprinkles before baking to give the cookies a little sparkle. :)

I packaged each cookie I was giving to a friend in a CD envelope – tying it with raffia and a fresh daisy and adding the message ‘Erin go Bragh’ – translation is “Ireland Forever.”

Do you have unexpected ways to add green to your St. Patrick’s Day?

sweet scones

January 24, 2014

scones

I think it is a natural instinct to have the urge to prepare food when the weather is cold.  With the temperature dipping into the single digits, and 10 inches of snow freshly fallen here in Connecticut, it is no wonder this instinct has kicked in!

photo of scone recipe

The result of this urge today are some freshly baked scones.   A friend gave me the recipe for these particular scones, written on a brown paper bag, well over twenty years ago.  I call these ‘the sweet scones.’  So, for Friday field trip today. we are taking a trip back to twenty years ago as I share the recipe given to me by my friend Kathy.

With a sugar glaze, these scones are sweeter than the ones I typically make.  Other than adjusting the cooking time for my oven, I haven’t changed this recipe a bit over the years… and, the result is still as delicious as when I first tasted these scones at a regular get-together of friends.

They are wonderful to bake for some friends stopping by because they are very quick to prepare – give them a try!

Thanks so much for stopping by to share.  Have a fabulous weekend!

a special birthday cake

January 21, 2014

birthday candle

Part of being a great hostess is to know your guests.  Today, so many people have dietary restrictions and part of good entertaining is taking the special needs of your guests into consideration.

Recently, I needed to come up with a birthday cake for a special birthday dinner where the guest of honor had some dietary concerns.  The solution I came up with was quick, easy, and delicious.

Angel food cake recipe

I served an angel food cake with a fresh berry topping and a Nutella filling.  All the items were purchased in the grocery store and the dessert took very little time to prepare.  I chose not to make my own angel food cake since our local grocery store offered one in the bakery section that cost less than the price of the tube pan I would need to purchase to bake my own.

Made with just sugar, flour, and egg whites;  angel food cake is a great alternative to a traditional birthday cake for many special diets.  As an optional filling, I sliced the cake horizontally with a serrated knife and spread one side with Nutella.  For the strawberry topping, I hulled and halved a pound of strawberries  – heated them up slightly in a pan on the stove with a tablespoon of sugar and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.  Easy, tasty, and all ready for a birthday candle!

caramel walnut biscotti

And, so quick…I had time to bake up some biscotti.  With an impending snowstorm, what is better than biscotti by a fire?  This batch is caramel walnut…

Thanks for visiting.  Hope you enjoyed sharing my ‘special’ birthday cake recipe.

persian cotton candy

January 17, 2014

Persian cotton candy

I am excited for Friday field trip today to share a dessert from another culture.  For Valentine’s Day this year I can serve a dessert that I find new and exciting… So, move over chocolate… this year I am serving Persian cotton candy!

Persian cotton candy

I enjoy exploring other cultures and having a friend from the Middle East helps me learn about foods from that part of the world.  Remember that wonderful Persian Love Cake I made last year?

My latest food introduction was a Middle Eastern dessert that compares with our cotton candy.  It is made from sugar like the American variety, but also contains shortening, flour, and cardamom and has a very delicate flavor.

Persian Cotton Candy

Interesting, isn’t it?

Because it is sold in a box, the challenge is to find a pretty way to serve it to guests.  It is very soft and separates into strands easily.  I found out from my friend that it is often packed into a glass to give the candy a shape and it can be served with nuts.

Since pistachios are so often used in Middle Eastern cuisine, I decided to use some chopped pistachios as a garnish for my cotton candy dessert.

Persian cotton candy

And, on one of my presentations, I could not resist adding a pool of honey.  I know – the ingredient is mostly sugar, so why add honey?  But, it tastes really good!

I hope you enjoyed exploring another culture with me as I tried Persian Cotton Candy.

diy menu board

January 14, 2014

diy menu board

Do you have a favorite plate that is chipped or cracked and yet you just can’t seem to throw it out…even though it isn’t used?  A great way to repurpose an imperfect piece is to create a menu board…giving the piece a new life without serving food on it!

supplies for a nautical menu board

The only supply required is Con-Tact brand adhesive chalkboard paper!  Creating a beautiful new menu board is as easy as cutting an appropriate sized piece of Con-Tact paper!  Since I wanted my creation to take on a nautical flare, I added some shells and twine to my supply list to add as embellishments.

menu board supplies

Because china has a slick surface, using Con-Tact paper works much quicker and easier than paint (eliminating the need for a primer).  Plus, the Con-Tact can be removed after use, if desired.

For my nautical menu board, I cut a piece of chalkboard Con-Tact paper to fit the inside section of the chosen plate.  After attaching it, I adding some twine and shell embellishments using a glue gun.  Viola!  How cute is that?

nautical menu board detail

Using a plate stand is a nice way to display the menu board…or even, hanging the menu board on the dining room or kitchen wall.  Such a great way to repurpose an old plate!

Maybe create one for a special Valentine’s Day meal?  :)  Have fun with it!

2014 word for the year

January 10, 2014

2014 word of the yearfood for the soul

I hadn’t planned on assigning a word of the year for 2014.  I had seen many others choose one and I wasn’t particularly motivated to choose one for myself.  I toyed with the idea of using the word renewal …but, I decided against it; thinking it sounded like such a cliche…and how could I possibly use a word like that for the entire year…the idea made me think of the movie Groundhog Day.

Okay, I thought…no word for the year.

Then I met a friend for lunch that I hadn’t seen for a while.  One of those friends that you can just jump right into a conversation the second you get together…start right where you left off with no hesitation.

meaning of friendship

So today’s Friday field trip ends up being the short journey I took to discover my word for the year.

It didn’t happen right when we devoured the artisan cheese plate…

artisan cheeseplate

Or even as I ate my local greens salad….

local greens salad

It wasn’t until sometime during my banana cream pie with sweet potato sorbet and pecans as I reached over to try my friend’s chocolate hazelnut budino, and spooned into the caramel at the bottom of the glass, that it really hit me…

My word for the year… Friendship.

It had to be Friendship.

Because the true nourishment that afternoon did not come from the food…the true nourishment came from a friendship…two friends connecting in a special way that only friends can.

food at Le Farm

In the words of Marcel Proust “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”

Even when I think of my wonderful family relationships, it is the friendships that make them special.

So for 2014, I want to acknowledge all the friendships that make my soul blossom…reconnect with some old friends… get together with some I don’t see as often as I would like…schedule regular family get-togethers…let those that I do see know how much they mean to me…

For it is truly the people in my life that give it meaning.

In the words of Henry David Thoreau “The language of friendship is not words but meanings.”

I value and acknowledge my friendships with a special focus this year and I look forward to creating some new friendships. :)

monthly book giveaway for january!

December 31, 2013

Vedge cookbook

It is that time again…a new month, a new giveaway!  Congratulations to Julianne for winning December’s giveaway book selection One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp…a great inspiration book to start your new year!

Now, for this month…the last time I offered a cookbook selection, there was a great response – so, I thought I would offer a really magnificent cookbook selection for the start of 2014!

Vedge cookbook

I chose the book Vedge by Rich Landau & Kate Jacoby.  The authors are the award-winning chef/owners of Vedge restaurant in Philadelphia.  I was very excited when I discovered this book was being released since I am such a fan of the restaurant.

The most amazing thing about this restaurant is that you don’t have to be a vegetarian to love it!  Yes, it is true that Landau has been in the forefront of vegetarian dining since 1994, but don’t let the name of his restaurant fool you…the food is superb by any standard – meat eaters are certain to be just as impressed as vegetarians with his outstanding creations.

Vedge restaurant in Philly

The restaurant Vedge in Philadelphia, housed in an elegant nineteenth-century townhouse, where chef-proprietors Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby serve amazingly flavorful and ingenious vegetable dishes.

Vedge opened in 2011 to rave reviews and I understood why after my first visit…what an awesome place!  You may not live near Philadelphia and have the chance to visit Vedge, but this new cookbook gives you the opportunity to recreate some of the restaurant’s selections in your own kitchen.

Just leave me a comment to be entered for a chance to win this wonderful cookbook offering recipes for 100 plates – large and small – that redefine vegetable cooking!

Good luck!

fireside field trip

white hot chocolate

How was your Christmas?

I want to share a recipe for something I enjoyed in front of the fire on Christmas Day…white hot chocolate!

candy canes for white hot cocoa

A nice change from the usual hot cocoa, white hot chocolate is comforting and delicious!  The key is to use a good quality hot chocolate – like Lindt or Ghirardelli.  I also add peppermint candy – crushing up some candy canes.  White chocolate peppermint…so festive…so yummy!

white hot cocoa

If you enjoy a really rich drink, substitute some of the milk in the recipe with heavy cream.  And, an ‘adult’  version is easy to create by adding some peppermint liquor.

This tastes so good in front of the fire on any winter evening…enjoy!

christmas sweets

Italian Christmas cookies

Only a few days until Christmas and I haven’t even started my baking!

With this year’s work schedule, I haven’t had time for any of my usual holiday preparations.

Friday field trip this week is a kitchen visit as I fit in a little late night baking session to make the top priority holiday cookie.  I am referring to the one most requested by my family – the “Italian” cookie.

Italian Christmas cookies

My recipe comes from an old Italian woman many years ago.  She was very ‘old world’ so I have always thought this recipe must be very authentic and I have never altered it.

And, I always stay true to the original recipe and use margarine, even though I never use it in any other baking.

Holiday cookies

I am sharing the recipe with you here.  (I topped mine with white non-pareils.)

Italian cookie recipe

So now I have the favorite cookie baked and ready for Christmas Eve.  If I can’t squeeze in any other holiday baking, at least I have the most important baking done!  I hope you have time to bake some of your favorite holiday sweets!

Are you thinking these cookies aren’t very consistent with my woodland theme this year?  Don’t worry, I got that covered…maple crème brulees, ice cream ‘pinecones’ and fireplace s’mores should fit the bill…don’t you think?

Have a wonderful weekend!
