get out of jail free

 pleasure in simple things blog

Attending an event in Boston recently was exceptionally interesting because it was held in The Liberty Hotel, 215 Charles Street – the original site of the Charles Street Jail!

The hotel design retained much of the historic structure, including the famed rotunda.  For me, the rotunda, making up the hotel lobby, is the most fascinating part of the current structure.

The hotel did a fabulous job of staying on theme with the original use of the site, including names like ‘Alibi’  for a bar and ‘Clink’ for a private dining area.

The Charles Street Jail, designed by architect Gridley James Fox Bryant and prison reformer Rev. Louis Dwight, was considered a model prison when it opened in 1851.  The building’s high windows and wealth of natural light were part of the reason, and the original 33 foot-high windows in the hotel’s lobby are breathtakingly unique.  The building is listed on both the state and national Registers of Historic Places.

In the 1970’s, the facility had become overcrowded and was declared unfit for occupation.  The jail finally closed in 1991, and the adjacent Massachusetts General Hospital later acquired the property.  It was redesigned and reopened in the summer of 2007 as a 300-room luxury hotel.

The hotel is also the site of the restaurant Scampo.  If you follow all the food and cooking shows, like I do, you probably have heard of its famed, James Beard Award-winning chef, Lydia Shire.  With Italian-inspired cuisine and a mozzarella bar, this restaurant has received many accolades, including the best Italian restaurant in Boston, as well as one of the best restaurants in the country.

I hope I have inspired you to make a visit to The Liberty Hotel on your next visit to Boston!

tableside at Raya Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel pleasure in simple things blog

I showed you the fabulous hotel I visited in California recently.  But, I didn’t show you the fabulous restaurant I visited IN the fabulous hotel!  For today’s Friday field trip, we are visiting Raya!

Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel view from Raya pleasure in simple things blog

I almost didn’t make it to Raya (the fabulous restaurant) because I was on a work trip and I didn’t have a speck of free time.  But, you know what?  When the assignment was completed, I had about an hour to spare while I waited for my transportation to arrive. I decided to use that time to grab a pre-flight snack at the restaurant I had wanted to visit the entire time I was at the hotel!

Poblano, garlic, goat cheese, and white soy – the start of my Zucchini Flower Soup served tableside at Raya in the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel.

I wasn’t even really sure if the food was any good at this restaurant – which I assumed it was based on the rest of my experience at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel.  But, what I did know about this restaurant was that it had an amazing view!  I had walked past it (usually, very much in a hurry) so many times while at the hotel!

I just wanted to sit in Raya at one of the tables with the ocean view!  And, that is exactly what I did on my last day at the Ritz, minutes before I was set to leave my new favorite hotel!

ice cream & liquid nitrogen!

May 20, 2016

cookie butter speculoos pleasure in simple things blog

A new ice cream shop called Milkcraft opened last Monday in Fairfield’s Brick Walk in the center of Fairfield, Connecticut.  An ice cream shop may not sound all that exciting, but there was quite a buzz going on about this place. menu at Milkcraft pleasure in simple things blogI really wanted to see first-hand what made the place unique, so I made a trip over and I am sharing with you on today’s Friday field trip.  I knew there would be a long line, so I planned my trip on a rainy evening figuring an ice cream shop would not be as crowded on a rainy night…poor assumption on my part!  Indeed, the line was long!  But, since I went with a friend and we were busy talking – mostly about the amazing popularity of Milkcraft  – the line seemed to go pretty quickly! Most of the line was occupied by teens and it was apparent why – social media!  The owner of the shop did a great job of using social media to get the hype going about the place.

Milkcraft visit pleasure in simple things blog

The unique part of the store was the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze each customer’s made-to-order ice cream batch in a mixer.  This process creates a super creamy texture to the product by eliminating any formation of ice crystals.  It is also really fun to watch!

Milkcraft boasts the use of locally sourced ingredients and fresh milk base from local farms. The menu, which is said to be updated seasonally, features sustainable and organic ingredients and delectable flavors such as roasted banana PBJ, Vietnamese coffee, cookie butter Speculoos and strawberry balsamic.  I have to admit though, I did have trouble figuring out what organic ingredient created the brilliant green and blue colors on some of the ice cream I saw served!

bubblecones at Milkcraft pleasure in simple things blog

The ice cream is served in two ways.  The most popular seemed to be the Bubblecone.  This is a Lego-like patterned bubble-waffle cone.  The Milkcraft website lists addresses in California and in Shanghai, China, so I have to think the origination of the concept must come from one of these two locales. And, the Bubblecones are definitely inspired by similar ones found in Hong Kong.

The second way the ice cream is served is called Creameebun.  This is a glazed donut used as a bun and the ice cream is tucked inside.

I chose the Bubblecone option and split a strawberry balsamic with my friend – she got the short end of the split!  I also tried the cookie butter Speculoos (the bright green one).  Both were really good with a wonderful texture.  They were very creamy and dense.

A fun trip!  If you decide to visit, I would chose a time during the day when the teen set is still in school!

It is interesting to note that the owner of Milkcraft is also the past owner of one of Fairfield’s former Brick Walk restaurants – Spazzi – one of my favorite places to eat back in the 1990’s!

fancy watermelon salad

May 17, 2016

fancy watermelon salad by pleasure in simple things blog

I love watermelon.  If you read my blog, you also know I love watermelon salad.  I make it by cutting chunks of watermelon and cheese (usually Feta), drizzling it with some extra virgin olive oil and adding cracked black pepper and basil.  Yum!

Inspired by a local restaurant, today I am showing you how I give my watermelon salad an upgrade by turning it into a fancier  ‘watermelon sandwich.’

watermelon salad made by pleasure in simple things blog

I do this by cutting 2 ½” rounds from watermelon slices using a cookie cutter.  I use the same cutter to cut a circle of mozzarella.  I drizzle the ‘sandwich’ I have created with extra virgin olive oil and add some cracked black pepper.  As garnish, I sprinkle crumbled Feta cheese on top and add chopped basil and walnuts.  The finished ‘sandwich’ is just soooo tasty!

The same great watermelon salad I always enjoy, but a much ‘fancier’ version!  It is the perfect size and presentation to use as a first course for your next dinner party!

With the great weather ahead – the perfect time to enjoy watermelon – I hope you will consider serving this winning dish to your guests!

wine cork magnets diy

May 3, 2016

diy cork magnet pleasure in simple things blog

A quick and easy DIY today.  A great way to repurpose wine corks is to turn them into refrigerator magnets!

You have probably seen me do this before if you follow me on Facebook, but since there are so many special occasions coming up soon, I thought this easy project was worth mentioning again today.

starting a cork magnet pleasure in simple things blog

Do you sometimes save a cork from a special occasion bottle of wine?  Well, here is a practical use for it.  Instead of putting it in a jar, make a magnet!  You can even make a notation on the back of the cork with a fine point permanent marker to remember a particular occasion associated with the corresponding cork.

glueing magnet onto a wine cork pleasure in simple things blog

And, if you like all the magnets on your refrigerator to coordinate – which I am sure you do (!) – you should be able to salvage plenty!  Each cork makes two magnets.  Just cut each cork in half and use a glue gun to attach a strong magnet on the back of each.

diy cork magnet pleasure in simple things blog

I particularly liked the cork I pictured here because it had an initial on it.  I gave it to someone who had a name starting with the letter B!  Enjoy!

With that said, it should not surprise you that my May book giveaway is salad related!  It is called Salad Dressings by Jessica Strand and it is a wonderful resource on how to create dressings for all your spring salad creations!

party garland diy

April 19, 2016

diy garland for a birthday celebration pleasure in simple things blog

I am making a garland today that is a super easy DIY. Mine is for a birthday party, but the same design can easily be adapted for a Mother’s Day celebration or any other party.

easy diy garland birthday celebration fun pleasure in simple things blog

Supplies needed are card stock, chalkboard paint or chalkboard Con-Tact paper, and twine or ribbon.

diy birthday garland pleasure in simple things blog

First, I am covering some card stock in chalkboard Con-Tact paper. Chalkboard Con-Tact paper is a staple in my craft room, but if you don’t have any, chalkboard paint can be used instead. I cut circles from the covered paper – one for each letter I need for my finished garland. I have a 2 1/2” circle cutter that makes the circle cutting really easy, but scissors can be used after tracing the desired circle size onto the paper using a cup or small plate.

diy party garland pleasure in simple things blogNext, with a small hole punch, I placed two holes in each circle to hang the letters from twine. Because the holes are small, I don’t need to tie knots in the twine to keep the letters in place. If the holes you make are much larger than your ribbon or twine, you will need to add knots to keep the letters in position.

making diy birthday garland pleasure in simple things blog

Chalkboard is just one of the many finishes you can use for this project. Old wallpaper samples, gift wrap, brown bags, or any decorative paper that may coordinate with your party’s theme, also work wonderfully. Just use a spray adhesive to mount the desired paper onto card stock. Old book pages look awesome as well…just use rubber stamps or permanent marker to add the letters.

I hope I have inspired you to make a festive party garland for your next celebration! A small version tied to skewers also works great as a cake topper!
