diy bunny topped jars

March 4, 2022

diy ceramic bunny jars

Today I have another easy DIY Target bargain bin Easter project!

You may remember this squirrel topped jar project (click here).  Well, today I have an Easter version using bunnies!  The bunnies are ceramic and I found them in the Target bargain bin.  When I saw them, I knew instantly I wanted to use them on jar tops so I went straight to the Easter candy section to decide what I would use to fill the jars.

Inspired by walking through all the seasonal aisles, I thought a ‘funfetti’ theme would be cool!  Target had some ‘funfetti’ jellybeans.  I picked those up and then I went over to the cookie aisle and found some iced circus cookies that would also be great with my theme!

I would get the jars I needed for my project from my recycling bin.

collage of DIY

The first step of the project is to prepare the jars.  Usually, labels come off easily after being soaked in hot water.  Any stubborn adhesive usually comes off with acetone (or nail polish remover).  After the jars are delabeled and washed, I prepare the bunnies.  This just requires a little sand paper (or emery board) to roughen up the bottom surface of each bunny.  This makes for a better adhesion to the jar tops.

I use a really strong adhesive called E6000 because I happen to have it on hand, but I am sure a glue gun would work as well.  I am very careful to follow the directions on the E6000 label because there are a lot of warnings associated with this product!

After the adhesive is totally dry, the bunny-clad jar tops can be spray painted the color of choice.  I chose my favorite off-white color since I think it goes best with the theme I chose.  And, even though the original bunnies have a shiny surface, I prefer a matte finish.

An easy project, right?  And there are so many variations possible based on favorite candy, color, theme, etc.!  I made a couple variations to show you some possibilities – but, they really are endless!

black jelly bean lover

Isn’t there always one that loves black jelly beans? I used leftover chalkboard paint for this one.

Use spray paint left from other projects like I did or purchase some from a building supply or craft store.

bunny tail jar

Certainly, the jars don’t need to be filled with sugary snacks – these contain carrot and celery sticks!  (These bunnies are painted in a glossy finish.) Or, how about using raisins as ‘bunny poop’?

healthful bunny jars

In my family on Easter, we always have a guess at how many candies are in a candy-filled jar and the winner gets the jar of candy!  You may want to incorporate the same idea into your holiday traditions and make a cute jar to go with it!

I hope you are inspired to create your own bunny jars!

wooden eggs from target

February 25, 2022

painted wooden Target egg

I love to shop at Target.  Like many of us, I always have to stop and browse the bargain bins at the store’s entrance.  It is so fun to find a life-changing item that costs a mere $1. or $3!

All the Easter items are starting to emerge and I was excited, on my last Target excursion, to find a box of 6 wooden Easter eggs in the front bins.

target wooden eggs

I knew it would be fun to decorate these plain wooden eggs.  I recently acquired a really cool vintage Easter basket at a thrift shop and I knew one of the wooden eggs would fit nicely inside it.

I took out some Easter décor a few days ago and I had put the vintage basket in my bathroom because I thought it looked great against the backdrop of Anna Rifle wallpaper I had in that room.

painting a wooden egg

Now that I brought the wooden eggs home, I knew I would paint one of them for the now empty basket sitting next to the bathroom sink on my vanity.  I would just paint a loose interpretation of what was on the wallpaper.  Perfect!  And then I would still have 5 eggs left to decorate!  Maybe I will decoupage a couple of them or maybe add a little gold leaf bunny on one!

That bargain bin inspires so many great ideas!

Pick up a pack of wooden eggs, or one of the many other decor items, and have some fun!

Yes – cleaning is required! Pieces are cleaned by garden staff regularly to ensure the brilliance of the glass.

If you follow this blog, you have probably seen photos of the artist’s 2017 collection (click to see) displayed at the New York Botanical Garden.

I was so lucky to have the opportunity to view Chihuly’s work again – in 2022.  And, it was so wonderful to do so in the beautiful February climate of Arizona when, back home in Connecticut, snow was covering the ground!

I hope you enjoyed seeing some of Chihuly in the Desert.  I recommend never passing up an opportunity to see Dale Chihuly’s work!  (Tip:  If you visit the Desert Botanical Garden, try to see the exhibit at the end of the day when the bright sun is not as distracting to the works.  Chihuly in the Desert continues through June.)

mini cookie cereal recipe

January 28, 2022

valentine bowl of cereal

I had never tried making cookie cereal when it became such a sensation.  I started thinking about it again recently while watching the Kids Baking Championship on Food Network.  As a weekly challenge, these young competitors featured on the show were creating some fabulous cookie cereals as well as some companion mousses to go with them.  These children were so talented – truly amazing to watch!

Inspired by these fabulous children on the show, I decided to create some of my own cookie cereal.

I knew I wanted to use my favorite shortbread recipe as the cookie, but I was torn on how to change it up to modify it for a breakfast cereal – I got it down to two choices.

milk onto cookie cereal

My first idea was a rosewater shortbread.  I thought the subtlety of the rosewater would make a great shortbread and I could add some chopped pistachios to the cookie and the cereal bowl for some added crunch.  It sounded like a really good flavor idea, but maybe more like a dinner party cookie than a breakfast choice!

So, I went with my second flavor idea…cinnamon!  I love cinnamon.  I buy Penzey’s brand spices which are super flavorful and the cinnamon is wonderful.  Cinnamon seemed a much more appropriate flavor for my breakfast cereal.  Plus, my “go to” nut milk is walnut (I drink Elmhurst brand – made with just filtered water and walnuts) and that would make a great pairing with the cinnamon shortbread!  I did add a little bit of instant coffee powder to my modified recipe as well – it is a breakfast cereal after all!  If it seemed the cereal needed a little extra crunch, I could throw in some chopped walnuts!

I modified and halved my usual shortbread recipe.  I didn’t want to have too many extra cookies around to eat!

mini cutter for shortbreads

I whisked together 1 ¼ cups flour, 1 ½ tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp instant coffee grounds and a dash of salt.  In a separate bowl, I beat 1 stick of softened butter with 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar on medium speed with a hand mixer until well blended.  Then, I slowly added the flour mixture.  Once it was all incorporated and resembled coarse crumbs, I gathered the dough into a ball using my hands, wrapped it in plastic wrap, and popped it into the refrigerator for a half of an hour.

Next, I rolled out the cold dough on a piece of parchment paper to ¼” and cut small cookie shapes. (I used a little flower shape, but of course at this time of year, a heart would make a great choice as well!)   I put the cut dough shapes on parchment set on a baking sheet and set the baking sheet into the fridge for 15 minutes to firm before baking in a preheated 350-degree oven.

I baked them for about 11 minutes, watching them carefully.  Shortbread should never get brown, but these needed to be cooked completely to hold up as cereal.

I used a 1 ¼” cookie cutter, and got over 9 dozen cookies – plenty for a couple bowls of cereal!

After they were baked and cooled, they could be put into an airtight container until ready to use – maybe for a Valentine’s Day breakfast!

spoonful mini cookies

When I tasted them, I wondered why I never made cinnamon shortbread before – they were delicious!  And, in a bowl of milk?  Scrumptious!  I may never make cookie cereal again, but I will definitely make cinnamon shortbread cookies again – I am adding them to my holiday cookie list!

Make mini cookie cereal – check!  That was a fun experiment!

Do you ever get inspired by watching a cooking show on television?

blended, not stirred

florida coast

Isn’t it something how our beverages of choice change with the seasons?

walking the florida shore

The first thing we wanted to do on a recent girls’ trip to Florida was to sample the frozen drinks!  A mere matter of hours ago we had been in a snowstorm and SO cold…we hit Florida and, just like that, we were ready for the cold beverages!

How wonderful to have our drink choice be the big decision of our day!

It was fun while it lasted, but of course, once we are back in New England and single digit temps, it’s all hot cocoa, hot tea or coffee!

What is your favorite cold weather drink?

Inspiration idea:  Tomorrow is the 126th birthday of The Breakers in Palm Beach.  Guests can enjoy a Tootsie Roll (created in 1896) martini or an Aged to Perfection cocktail in honor of the anniversary.  I say, buck the system and try one of these cool drinks this weekend!  Both use orange juice, so make up a fresh batch in advance!

candy cane chocolate hearts

January 7, 2022

white candy canes

So, I have quite a few candy canes left from my holiday decor.  I love decorating with them, but I don’t really eat them!  Now that the holidays are behind us, I was trying to come up with some ways to use the leftovers!  Using them to stir hot cocoa is always fun!  I have pushed them into chocolate covered marshmallows which is also a fun way to use them.

I have never though, tried to melt them…until now!  After some experimentation, I discovered my candy canes got nice and soft, but not very hot, after being in a 250 degree oven for 5 minutes.  The softness made them flexible.  Since Valentine’s Day is approaching, I decided to make some hearts by putting two candy canes together.  I simply put the candy canes on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper in the basic shape I wanted.  After 5 minutes, I took them out of the oven and gently pinched the ends together.

Deciding to add chocolate – they are for Valentine’s Day after all and mint and chocolate go great together, right? – I took the hearts off the parchment paper and drizzled some dark chocolate onto the parchment.  I put the baking sheet into the fridge for a little bit to set the chocolate.  After taking the baking sheet out of the fridge, I set my candy cane hearts on top of the chocolate drizzle.

hearts with drizzle

Next, I filled the hearts I created with melted white chocolate and popped the baking sheet back into the fridge to set.

candy cane hearts

After the chocolate was set, I took the hearts off the pan and ended up with some pretty drizzled peppermint/chocolate hearts!  A great recycling of my leftover candy canes!

There are so many variations possible with this simple procedure.  The drizzle can be pink or red if you prefer.  Or, forgo the drizzle and write a name on the heart when the chocolate is set.

I hope you  are inspired!  Set your oven to 250 degrees and start getting creative with those leftover candy canes!!

easy diy marker ornament

December 17, 2021

orn holiday diy gold

Making holiday ornaments using paint markers and glass balls is always fun to do.  It doesn’t take any talent to come up with a nice looking ornament for tree hanging or as a gift.  The only supplies needed are clear glass ornaments and paint markers.  A pretty ribbon, of course, goes without saying!

before ornament

Craft stores sell boxes of clear ornaments.  Picking up a box or two when they are on sale is a great idea – having these ornaments on-hand means a homemade gift is always at the ready!

For the design here, in addition to the ornament and marker, I also used some stick-on crystals from the craft store.

diy supplies
This design is probably the easiest one I have ever done!  Give it a try!  (I spray painted the silver top of the ornament with a burnished gold paint and added some glitter – the silver was a little too shiny silver for me!)

christmas is in the air

December 10, 2021

four things tote

Holiday decorating comes in a close second to holiday wrapping for me.

Traditionally, the day after Thanksgiving is a day for retreating to my ‘wrapping room’ for a full day of creating wrapping for gifts I plan on giving.  Sometimes, like this year, I am not able to fit in my favorite creative activity of the season.

But something I always have time for is to incorporate new items I have found or made during the year to my holiday decor.  Today I am sharing a few.

chandelier ornament

You know I have a great new bathroom this year (click here to see) and, of course, I needed to find a few decor items to add to it for the holiday season!  I found these swoon-worthy chandelier ornaments at an after Christmas sale last year – aren’t they perfect?

And, I love these sparkly guest towels I found at T.J. Maxx.

guest towel

A special ornament always looks best displayed on its own.  This one is just propped on top of a rattan covered drinking glass.

snow ornament

And, I made this mini wreath specifically to use in the new bathroom.  (At the end of last holiday season I made tons of 6″ wreaths using many of my collected ribbons and bottle brush trees – so fun to make!)

New incorporated items popped up in other parts of the house as well.  I picked up this pretty white pedestal dish at a thrift shop and it is so perfect for displaying a single decor item.

And, my favorite new ornament is this stack of books!

Have you incorporated any new items into your decor this year?  It is fun to find things throughout the year that may work during the holidays.

sweater weather decor

December 3, 2021

storefront

One of the great things about spending some time visiting favorite stores at the holidays is picking up some decor inspiration.

I have a quick DIY to share with you from a visit to one of my fave gift shops.

sweater vase closeup

Out and about on a recent shopping excursion, I saw these vases at Grace in Niantic, Connecticut all wrapped up in ‘sweaters.’  So cute, right?

What a great way to turn any old, boring clear vases (the ones that come from the delivered floral arrangements) into fun seasonal elements!

And even if you don’t have any old sweaters or clear vases laying around – they are the perfect items to thrift!

Love this!  Use sweaters that best match your decor.  Check out my creations in upcoming Instagram stories!

Happy crafting!  Thanks for stopping by!

frozen holiday yogurt bark

November 19, 2021

frozen yogurt bark

If you follow this blog, you know how much I love frozen treats – ice pops…frozen drinks….I’m a sucker for any icy goodness!

Well, I came up with a frozen, guilt-free holiday treat.  No, it is not an ice pop!  It is a frozen holiday bark!

candy dish of frozen holiday bark

I mixed 2 cups plain nonfat Greek yogurt with ¼ cup honey and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.  I spread this mixture on a parchment-lined baking sheet to about a ¼” thick – it made an 11” x 7” slab on the parchment.

Next, I added some fun extras – dried cherries, pistachios, and cocoa chips.

ingredients for yogurt bark

So now my guilt-free creation is looking like a festive holiday bark!

I popped it into the freezer to set and then broke it into pieces to eat!  The remaining pieces are stored in a covered container in the freezer.

Fun, right?

yogurt bark pieces

There are so many fun variations to try – you can come up with some using your favorite extras – dried fruit, raisins, sunflower seeds, nuts, sesame seeds, etc.  I like the consistency of the chewy dried fruit with the yogurt.

I haven’t been this excited about a snack since I discovered frozen grapes!  Maybe if I make a version with lemon peel I could forgo my Thanksgiving lemon meringue pie?  Now I wouldn’t go that far!
